Book of Mormon Geography

A Unique Approach for the Lands of The Book of Mormon

And it came to pass...

Why was the Land called PROMISED?

Why two nations, Jaredites and Nephites were destroyed at  the same place, Cumorah and Ramah?

This is a unique and intriging Book of Mormon Geography model. It is not based upon any other model, that I am aware. It all started after meeting Bobby Morris. Bobby was a LDS Temple worker with me - Bountiful Temple. He told me some very sacred experiences that happened with him about the Book of Mormon, the plates and the "Hall of Records - or cave" where all the sacred records were hidden by Mormon after being retrived from Hill Shim. Bobby was a simple and holly man. He passes away a few years ago. I dedicate this blog to him. Our friendship is eternal and his information about the location of the Book of Mormon places was key to my discoveries.

Explore New Possibilities

Why Not?

And that after the waters had receded from off the face of this land it became a choice land above all the other lands, a chosen land of the Lord; wherefore the Lord would have that all men should serve him who dwell upon the face thereof;
And that it was the place of the New Jerusalem, which should come dow out of heaven, and the holy sanctuary of the Lord.
Behold, Ether saw the days of Christ, and he spake concerning a New Jerusalem upon this land.
Ether 13:2-4

In the Begining...

As I reflect on the first inhabitants of the Planet Earth, the history of the creation and the Judeo/Muslim-Christian belifes, the personages of Adam, Eve and their posterity plays a key roll in my assumptions about the Book of Mormon Geography.
Even thou Earth's topography was quite differente from our present day, the Land of Missouri was, and always will be a sacred ground. By revelation to the Prophet Joseph Smith, this was the land of the Garden of Eden, the bigining of civilization a "promised land." (D&C 107:53)
Adam-ondi-Ahman, in Davies County, is about 60 miles north from Independence. To understand better this pesrpective, I will mention later in this presentation the "Growing Earth Theory". *

Noah, Before the Flood, Lived in Present
Missouri Area

One of the great patriarchs, Noah, lived no far from his community. They need to stay close together for protection, resources, and most important for religious porposes. I can positively affirm that the Present America - the New World, was in reality the Old World. As the Earth started to "expand, to grow"*, the land masses were spread not only in the Atlantic, but also in the Pacific.
The purpose of this blog is not to defend or to explain how the Earth was and the theories that support these views, Pangea, Growing Earth etc.. The only thing that matterd to me is that, by revelation, the location of the Garden of Eden was in Jackson County MO (D&C 57:1-3) and that there was a universal Flood (Genesis 7:11). Based on this two assuptions, accepted presently by faith, all the other conclusions were made about my opinion on the Geography of the Book of Mormon.

Land, Is A Key Element in Covenant Making.

Every time the Lord makes covenants with people, the concept of receiving a "Land of Promise" is included. It happend to Enoch, Noah, Jared, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, Lehi, Joseph Smith etc.
The Sacred Land around Edem was given to Adam and his posterity. A prototype of the Garden of Eden was established in the land where the seed of Noah spread after the flood. Shem, Melchisedek son of Noah, was contemporary of Abraham. Him and his posterity received  the Land of Canaan as a Promised Land.
The reason I am approching, land, inheritance and covenant is not only to know where, but WHY they came to a specific place in America.

Nessary Migrations as Part of Covenant Blessings to the House of Joseph, Son of Jacob, Son of Isaac, Son of Abraham.

Before Lehi's death, he placed a special blessing upon his son Joseph. (2 Nephi 2,3,4) Joseph of Egypt, Joseph son of Lehi, Joseph Smith analogy

Why Did Mulek, Son of King Zedekiah, He Being From the Tribe of Judah, came to the Promised Land?

Ark of the Covenant and other King Salomon Temple sacred objects. Last time the Ark of the Covenant is mentioned is around the time King Zedekiah reign. Maybe his son Mulek survided for the sole purpose to save the Ark by bringing it with him to the Promised Land.

What is the Best Way to Get to Promised Land?

Would Mulek and or Lehi endevor a 10000 plus miles of open sea through the Pacific route, or half of that using the Atlantic?

Uniformitarianism only, Catastrophis only? What about both?

How to Explain the Development of the Mound Builders and Mississippian Culture, outside the Book of Mormon Geography?

Hagoth's ship left to the Land Northwasr aroud 50 BC. The Heartland cultures such as Hopewell florish around 1 to 750 BC.

South and Central America, Pacific Islands (Polinesians)

House of Israel migrations to other places, including Mexico, Central America, South America - Peru, Bolivia, Chile.
We have the account of the Lord'd visitation to the Nephites as part of the House of Israel. Could it happend to others Israelites in the Americas but not descendants of Lehi?
Could others migrated to the America Continent and not be from the House of Israel? From China, Indonesia or India perhaps?

Most of the scholars, researches and other "Indiana Jones" like me have a scriptural understanding that the candidates locations for the Book of Mormon geography MUST have some key elements such as:
a. North, South, East and West Seas (large bodies of water)
b. A body of land Northward
c. A smaller body of land called Southward
d. A "Narrow Neck" of land that unite both masses of land
e. A scale, size, that fits travel time mentioned in the Book of Mormon.

Thanks for coming this far. Here is the meet, the reward, or maybe more of your time lost.

Up to this point, my purpose was to wet your appetite by asking key questions so you may be more open mind and see outside the main box that have been presented to us by other great reseachers.

Behold, the Present Body of Land we call United States of America.

This is a special place in the Earth. As mentioned before, it was the place reveled to Prophet Joseph Smith as the Garden of Eden and the Land of the Patriarchs. It was founded upon the pronciples of Liberty. Its Forefathers were inspired to create a place for future glorious events, including the return of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Patterns, the Lord loves patterns, the scriptures are full of them, here is just another one.

Everything tesdtifies of Christ, things above and below. (Scripture). Present science is a honoroble instrument to find the absolute truth. Science is a organic field, always changing, adapting and rediscovering. At this moment there are few absolute truths. So we look the past to understand the present and thus be able to better project the future. It is amazing the things one can learn by simpli observing.
In this case, "IF" all the ice in the poles melted, the oceans level would dramactaly rise changing the present cost line. The area in blue shows a new conteur. Notice that California, Baja California Part of Texas, Florida etc are all under water. Pay special atention to the area of Great Lakes, Arkansas and Missouri. The Golf of Mexico extends to the Great Lakes. Amazing isn't it? (Reference)

Let's zoom in and analize the new area. The Mississipi River coast line extendes widelly, as the present "scar" shows.

This knowledge is not new for science, any geologist will say that there was a shallow sea in the middle of the USA.. (Reference) The issue is datind it. Science will say that this happened millions of years ago. Maybe it was, however a cycle coud also happend as it may be in the future. How long would take to raise the ocean level to this point? Well it depends. It could take thousands of years (Uniformitarianism), slow changes in the weather pattern, carbon emmissions etc, or maybe a few days (Catastrophism), something like a super heating of the poles - vulcanic activity, meteor etc.

So, Here is the Proposed Land of Promise, Not Enormus, Not a tiny Iland, Just the Correct Size with ALL the Key Elements.

Scale, size, is one on the most underobserved aspects of the Book of Mormon Geography. The relationship between places and events MUST MAKE SENSE. Can you imagine, travel 2000 miles with women, children and supplies in a total wild environment just to battle? Does this make sence. If you were a Lamanite, would you follow a group of people 2000 miles just to battle them? Why not destroy them ASAP, saving time, fatige, beeing away from your family etc?

Why it is the land called North WARD and South WARD , and not Land North and South?

As I think about the lands Northward and Southward, I ask myself, Northward of what? Southward of what? What is the geographical element that defines "from this poit up is North and from this point down is South? It must be something in between correct? Well the only land in between is the Narrow Neck of Land (NNL) There are three options for the location of the Narrow Neck of Land in relashionship to the Lands Northward and Southward, left, center and righ. If the NNL was located in the center, the lands should NOT be called Northward and Southward. They should be Land North and South. The addition of "Ward" in North and South sugests that to access either one, it was necessary to travel in an angle, towards, in the direction of North and South.

The Land Southward

Land Southward,

Yes, this is correct. The Ouachita Mountains in Arkansas is my proposal for the Land Southward

R. Harlan claimed that the word Ouachita is composed of two Choctaw words: ouac, a buffalo, and chito, large. It means the country of large buffaloes, numerous herds of the American bison having formerly covered the prairies of Ouachita.
According to the Encyclopedia of Oklahoma History and Culture, the name comes from the French spelling of the Caddo word washita, meaning "good hunting grounds."
Ether 10:19
And it came to pass that Lib also did that which was good in the sight of the Lord. And in the days of Lib the poisonous serpents were destroyed. Wherefore they did go into the land southward, to hunt food for the people of the land, for the land was covered with animals of the forest. And Lib also himself became a great hunter.

It is all about scale, relationships, distances and resources

The Land Southward was smaler than the Northward. From the arrival of Lehi in the West (Scripture), we notice that contention was constant between Laman, Lemuel and the sons of Ismael against Sam, Nephi and Zoram. They were few in numbers and even after Nephi leaving the place were they arrived, there was still wars between them (Scripture). This suggests that the Land of the First Inheritance and the City of Nephi were not to far away from each other. The mentioning of West Sea "South" also suggests a differnt place from just West Sea. The Land of Nephi at the time of Nephi was insignificant smaller than the same land hundreds of years later where it "surrounded" the Land of Zarahemla.
The place in Ouachita Mountains where the Nephites ans Lamanites lived was about 150 x 50 miles. The reagion is rich with small mountains, green valleys and rivers. During the summer is quite hot (Scripture), with a well defined four seasons. (Scripture Nephi-Snow)

The Land of Israel and the Land Southward

Jerusalem is located at (32.N, 35 E), almost in the same latitute as the proposed Land Southward (34 N, 93 W).  The proposed Temple site that Nephi built was only 3 degrees north, in the East - West alignment, of Solomom's Temple.

Expanding Alma 22

Alma 22 is an amazing map. Words such as "regions, round about, bordering, divided, ran, seashore, head of, running, spread through, place of, driven, nearly, surrounded by, parts, even until, called, gives so much information. The key here are the relationship between these places. It is like a small puzzle. Each piece connects with another. The scale is quite small and must fit together perfectly. Just to understand its relationship, the scale must be small to the point that Alma understood it with no problem. The idea of hundreds of miles between them does not make sense. How could Lamoni send a proclamation to his people if they where spread over a large area.
Here are the lands mentioned in Alma 22:27-29
1. Sea in the east and west
2. Land of Zarahemla
3. Narrow strip of Wilderness
4. Wilderness in the north, by the Land of Zarahemla
5. Manti
6. Head of the River Sidon
7. Wildernes on the west - Land of Nephi
8. Land of Nephi

Expanding Alma 22

9. Land of First inheritance
10. Land East, by the seashore
11. Northern parts
12. Land Bountiful
13. Land Desolation
14. Land so far north...people being destroyed
15. South Wilderness
16. Land Northward
17. Line Bountiful and Land Desolation
18. Small neck of land between land Northward and Southward
Question: Why did the Nephites protected the Narrow Neck of Land?

Lands within the Land Southward

There ae three main areas in the Land Southward.
1. Land of First Inheritance.
2. Land of Nephi
3. Land of Zarahemla

Big Enough,

And now as many of the Lamanites and the Amlicites who had been slain upon the bank of the river Sidon were cast into the waters of Sidon; and behold their bones are in the depths of the sea, and they are many.
Alma 3:3
3. This war between the Lamanites and Amlicite against the Nephites, acurred in the Land of Zarahemla. We can assume that the place, in the River Sidon, where the bodies were cast and be able to be washed away to the depths of the sea, was not to far away from the "Sea".

Small Enough

34 And thus he cleared the ground, or rather the bank, which was on the west of the river Sidon, throwing the bodies of the Lamanites who had been slain into the waters of Sidon, that thereby his people might have room to cross and contend with the Lamanites and the Amlicites on the west side of the river Sidon.
35 And it came to pass that when they had all crossed the river Sidon that the Lamanites and the Amlicites began to flee before them, notwithstanding they were so numerous that they could not be numbered.
Alma 2:35-35
We see here that at this specific place in the River Sidon, there were two interesting features, 1. It was shallow enough that they "might have room to cross and contend". 2. Not far from there, the River Sidon was deep enough that the current could carrie the bodies southward to the "Sea".

Why did the Lamanites fight against the Nephites?

This unique land feature was the most protected of all the lands. Why? Because it gave access to the Land Northward. The Nefites had control over that are for hundreds of years.
28 "And...we made a treaty with the Lamanites and the robbers of Gadianton, in which we did get the lands of our inheritance divided.
29 And the Lamanites did give unto us the land northward, yea, even to the narrow passage which led into the land southward. And we did give unto the Lamanites all the land southward." Mormon 2:28-29
Notice that the Nephites still wanted to control the access to the Land Northward.
"And there we did place our armies, that we might stop the armies of the Lamanites, that they might not get possession of any of our lands; therefore we did fortify against them with all our force." Mormon 3:6

There is a LINE!

The word "line" could be a geographic feature such as a river, valley, mountain range, etc.
In my proposal, there is a literal line made by a small hill range that runs from east to west. The distance is about 15 miles, or between 1 to 1.5 days for a nephite warrior to run.
It is not difficult to protect such "line". If it is to large, forget it. the Lamanites could easaly penetrate and break the forces.
At this stage of Mormon's life, he have two main concerns, his people and the records.

What was the reason for Hagoth's migration?

5 And...Hagoth...built him an exceedingly large ship, on the borders of the land Bountiful, by the land Desolation, and launched it forth into the west sea, by the narrow neck which led into the land northward.
6 And...many of the Nephites who did enter therein and did sail forth with much provisions, and also many women and children; and they took their course northward. And thus ended the thirty and seventh year.
7 And in the thirty and eighth year, this man built other ships. And the first ship did also return, and many more people did enter into it; and they also took much provisions, and set out again to the land northward.
Alma 63:5-7

Land without timber - Limited Resources

5 Yea, and even they did spread forth into all parts of the land, into whatever parts it had not been rendered desolate and without timber, because of the many inhabitants who had before inherited the land.
Hel 3:5 (49-39 BC)
"Into whatever part id thad not been rendered desolate and without timber" implies a limited area.
8 And it came to pass that they did multiply and spread, and did go forth from the land southward to the land northward, and did spread insomuch that they began to cover the face of the whole earth, from the sea south to the sea north, from the sea west to the sea east.
Hel 3:8 (49-39 BC)
Here we see why it was a limite area, there was a sea south, sea north, sea west and sea east. There was no place to go.
Maybe this was the reason why Hagoth build ships and thousands migrated to the Land Northward?
